Empowering Women Refugees Through Craftsmanship: A Journey of Learning, Hope, and Collaboration

At Chal Shoes, we are committed not only to creating sustainable footwear but also to fostering empowerment through craftsmanship. One of the most fulfilling experiences has been working with women refugees from Bangladesh. In partnership with UNHCR, we conducted a workshop focused on embroidery and shoemaking, with a particular emphasis on creating babouches—a simple yet elegant style that introduces basic techniques while encouraging creativity and self-expression.

The Babouche as a Learning Tool

The choice of babouche as the first project was intentional. Its design, with its simple construction, made it the perfect starting point for learning how to transform 2D materials into 3D objects. As these women crafted their babouches, they not only gained an understanding of shoemaking but also developed a sense of ownership and pride in the pieces they created.

From Katha to French Knots

The embroidery portion of the workshop was an essential part of the learning process. We began by teaching Katha (blanket stitch), a fundamental technique known for its simplicity and versatility. As the participants became more confident, we introduced more intricate stitches like French knots. This progression allowed them to move from basic to more complex designs, building their skills step by step. The transformation was incredible—what began as small, simple stitches became intricate, stunning patterns that showcased each participant’s growing expertise.

Building Confidence and Community

One woman’s journey in particular stood out. When she first joined the workshop, she was pregnant and deeply concerned about her ability to provide for her future child. However, as she continued learning and improving her skills, she became more confident. She realized that not only could she support her family with the skills she was acquiring, but she could also take pride in the craft she was mastering.

Her transformation was a powerful reminder of the importance of creating spaces that allow women to learn, grow, and take control of their futures. As the workshop progressed, so did her belief in her ability to build a better life for her child.

A Collaboration with UNHCR

This workshop was made possible by the support of UNHCR, which identified the refugee communities in need of this training, and we were honored to be part of their mission to empower women through skill-building initiatives.

Crafting a Better Future

The experience was not just about learning new skills—it was about creating a platform where these women could build their confidence, forge connections, and envision a brighter future. By learning the craft of shoemaking and embroidery, these women gained valuable skills that not only enhance their livelihoods but also open doors to economic independence.

At Chal Shoes, we firmly believe that the future of fashion is one where sustainability, creativity, and empowerment come together. Our collaboration with UNHCR is a step toward that future, proving that the art of craftsmanship can offer a pathway to hope and opportunity for displaced communities.
